2.First Aid
This book is called the bible of USMLE. Here I’m attaching a review of Tamal Nath who has cracked USMLE step 1 recently.
According to Tamal,“I genuinely believe that this book played an important role in my step 1 exam. In fact this book was game changer for me. I recommend you if you haven’t a good basic knowledge of the subjects then first cover up the videos lectures mentioned in this blog & start this First Aid book. If anybody asks me to summarise this book in one sentence i will tell them that you don’t need a dozen of books if you have First Aid. The concise bullet point, diagrams, mnemonics made the information stick. I started annotating my copy with notes from videos lectures. By the time exam day rolled around i only followed this book. The last part,my study strategy of First Aid 😀. I was confident that i had a good basic of the subjects,so i started using First Aid early in my prep. Marked the weker areas with pencil/colour pen. Revised those parts until a good confidence is built. You can use spaced repetition techniques also.

Anki:
Anki is a very great tool for step 1. It has spaced repetition system. Start with premade decks (Zanki,Anking,Brosencephalon). Review the questions daily, mark them easy/moderate/ hard. Anki automatically suggests the questions for you according to your preferences. You can add your personalized deck also. Set a daily goals and review them. After a few days you will get a good result.
Just like building muscles in the gym, you won’t see results after just a day or two of exercise. But with consistent effort, you’ll start seeing positive results after a few months. Similarly, with patience and steady progress in your studies, success will follow, Insha’Allah.
For those just starting their preparation:– Start by studying 2-3 systems from First Aid and then begin solving questions related to those systems. Try to solve at least 30-40 questions daily.Remember, in medicine, the competition is with yourself, compare your knowledge from six months ago with where you are now. During any exam preparation, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed and worried about retaining information. However, consistent effort and time are key.
